Hatherly School brings to life its’ mission “to foster serious learning in a safe and nurturing environment” every day. Our teachers are highly qualified and credentialed. They continue to refine their craft through graduate courses and other professional development activities. Our staff annually participates in a building-based book study or initiative to enhance their skills as a faculty. By utilizing Title IV funds, we will be working this year with the Open Circle Sustainability initiative with the Stone Center located at Wellesley Collegeto re-invigorate our social and emotional curriculum, first started in 1999 at Hatherly. Open Circle meetings will be held during the first teaching block every Wednesday morning. Our sixth graders will help in leading the younger grade meetings. All building staff will be trained in using the positive support systems of Open Circle Curriculum to help enhance a safe and nurturing environment.

Our school community has embraced the motto “Together We Make Our School a Success”. Parents, teachers, students and the Scituate community support our school in many different ways; our school council works to frame the budget and policy discussions with the school committee, our PTO works diligently to balance fundraising and fun-raising. Through the PTO,  parents support a variety of school enrichments such as field trips, buses, and many high quality in-school programs such as Museum of Science, Plimouth Plantation, Bay Colony Educators, Native American Perspectives, poetry and plays through their fundraising support, the PTO funds teachers’ supplies, student binders and agendas, as well as many technology enhancements, such as Smartboards and LCD projectors. Students look forward to the many annual fun-raising events (which build community spirit) such as our Annual Holiday Fair, Spirit Days, Halloween party, Hatherly Hoopla, and Mr. Mundt’s Family Music Night. We cannot forget the many room parents, classroom volunteers, library volunteers and field days helpers that are also involved in the Hatherly School community and contribute in making our school a success!

This Hatherly School building opened in 1963, replacing the original Hatherly School located on Country Way (where the Purple Dinosaur Playground now stands). Hatherly has approximately 380 students in grades K-6. This year, 2009-2010, will be our first year with a tuition-based full day kindergarten class and two half day kindergarten classes. Our curriculum is aligned to the Massachusetts Frameworks and integrated in all our special subjects. Curriculum descriptions are under the curriculum tab on this webpage.

Our school has substantially benefitted from generous parent and town support. Last year we dedicated an art room which has a Smartboard, kiln, and an outside deck. We also have a gymnasium with safety padded walls and sports murals, again from the support of our Hatherly families. We have a PC lab with twenty five (25) computers and we have a custom painted mural in the library, as well. The music space, though on the stage, has a state of the art sound system to support our general music, choral and instrumental music programs and our fall and spring band and chorus concerts which are “road touring” quality. Our students’ fantastic art works turn our lobby into an ever changing gallery in a wide variety of media. In June, we have our annual Field Days which culminate a year of team building and cooperative group problem solving benefitted by our Physical Education Project Adventure curriculum. Come visit us at Hatherly….. there is always plenty to do and see!!
