New Stair Lift Installed at Gates Intermediate School: The new year welcomed the arrival of a new wheelchair lift installed on the 5-level stairs that join non-aligned floors of the A-wing with the B-wing. The $50,000 Garaventa inclined stairway lift is a state of the art machine from a leading manufacturer. It replaces the decrepit battery-powered lift that has plagued the school and frustrated the maintenance department for years.
The new stairway lift completes the second phase of capital improvements at Gates School aimed specifically at improving facilities for disabled students, staff, and the public. In the summer of 2007, the antiquated 3-story elevator in the B-wing (located below the building’s central cupola) was completely renovated and modernized.
Energy Conservation Measures Presented to Advisory Committee: On January 25, 2007, during Advisory Committee deliberations on the School Department’s proposed FY 2008 budget, a summary of the many recent efforts that have been made by the School Department to conserve energy and constrain energy bills was presented. A copy of his report to the Advisory Committee is presented at the following link: SPS Energy Conserv Measures.

School Building under the New Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA): In 2004 the state legislature established the MSBA, replacing the defunct School Building Assistance Program of the Department of Education. On July 1, 2007, the MSBA will begin accepting new school building and renovation projects. The Scituate School Department has submitted a Statement of Interest to the MSBA for the replacement of or renovation of the Gates Intermediate School. On the following link [MSBA Flow Chart - Gates] we provide a time line for a possible scenario for the various phases in the process of obtaining MSBA approval of a new middle school project and continuing to an ultimate completion/occupation date of September 2011.
